Heading to Prom For
Old People |
|
After meeting Christine's friends Naomi and Mike last weekend,
they invited us to their friends' house for a prom party.
Since the vast majority of invitees were in their mid-30's, it
was really more of an 80's throw-back prom. So...Caroline
scoured the local thrift (and costume) shops looking for a nice,
80's-style-poofy-sleeved-dress (found at Thrift Mart - $7.99!)
and Scott found himself a hot pink tie and cumberbund to wear
with his tux. Duly decked out in authentic prom-wear, we
headed to pick up Naomi and Mike (also sporting snazzy 80's prom
threads - see photo) and head to the party. Our hosts,
Alexandra and Rob, really gave it 110%. They invoked an
'Under the Sea' theme, putting up an aquarium patterned backdrop
throughout the 'ballroom'. They also managed to rent a
disco ball, construct a balloon arch for photo-ops, and even
provided a keg (of beer!). We
met lots of cool people who all seemed to put plenty of effort
into donning 'period prom costume'. A good time, Scott had
to drag Caroline off of the dance floor after 2am!
Although we were a little suspicious when Rob and Alex won King
and Queen... we all smell a little foul play. Thanks again
to Naomi and Mike for inviting us out!
The gents do their best too, and give plenty
of high-thumbed approval
Aren't we a handsome couple? The fake
flower corsage twist-tied to Caroline's wrist does make for an
elegant touch, no? |
Naomi & Mike pose under the (semi) arch of balloons. Mike
does an admirable job of propping Naomi up so that
left-shoulder-poof doesn't go toppling her over.
The ladies bring their A game... Can you see
Caroline's little head behind the mohawk in the pink dress?

Reunion #2! |
|
05/07/07 -
Albuquerque, NM
Catching up with yet
another San Francisco friend, the infamous and fabulous
Christine Gabbard |
|
Christine and Sophia came to town this past weekend to visit
Christine's old college roommate from her UNM days. It was
great catching up, and hearing Christine's always amusing
stories (i.e. weird AOL people, naked sauna-bicycle lady, and of
course the classic Donahue tales). We had a great dinner
at El Pinto, followed by a few more drinks at our place where
the ladies got to share their fantasies of somehow scheming
their way into some random rich old couple's will. Rich
old acquaintances beware. Christine's old roommate Naomi
and husband Mike turned out to be loads of fun, and even invited
us to prom (for old people) next weekend! Looking forward
to it, and will be sure to have photos of that engagement.
Sophia, Caroline, Naomi & Christine are amused
by something... perhaps deciding how to spend their
inheritances?
Mike & Scott, not quite as amused |

Reunion! |
|
05/02/07 - Santa Fe, NM
Catching up with San
Francisco friends in Santa Fe |
|
We were fortunate enough to be able to spend the day last
Saturday with SF friends, Janet and Mark, during their recent
visit to Santa Fe. Mark was taking Janet to visit some of
his old haunts (somewhat to Janet's chagrin), as he used to live
in Santa Fe before we met them and before Janet and Mark were
married two years ago. Incidentally, their wedding weekend
was the last time we saw them, when we traveled from Puerto
Vallarta to Marin County, CA to attend their beautifully
executed, elegant yet casual event in April of 2005. This
time, after a delicious New Mexican cuisine lunch, the four of
us spent an enjoyable and leisurely, albeit rainy, afternoon
shopping at the Nambe outlet (where Janet hit pay-dirt!),
stopping for a quick coffee at Mark's favorite coffee spot and
finally lounging and chatting over a couple of bottles of wine
in Janet and Mark's very charming and luxurious B&B suite.
And I suspect that Mark achieved his goal of eating as much New
Mexico green chile as humanly possible that weekend! It
was great to see you guys. Come back soon!
(Unfortunately, we failed to take any pictures this time, but
here are Janet and Mark at their wedding.) |

Farmer Scott |

04/18/07 - Albuquerque, NM
I pretty much rock at
farming |
|
Yeah, I said it. I rock at farming. After
being inspired to eat locally by
The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan, I went over to
www.localharvest.org
and found our local farms. Turns out, there's one right
across the river from us, about a mile as the crow flies (or 10
minute bike ride). You sign up for a season of produce and
pick up your box every week. They've also got a "work
share" program, where if you work at the farm for 2 1/2 hours
each week you get half off of your food! I thought it
sounded like it might be fun (and I'm notoriously thrifty), so I
went ahead and signed up to work. And I farmed today.
Man did I farm. Just need to find me a pair of overalls
and a new straw hat, and I'm good for the season! |

New Bikes! |

04/14/07 - Albuquerque, NM
Check out our sweet
rides |
|
After going so long without a bicycle, Scott's been really
excited to get his out of storage. He then immediately
decided one was not enough, so with the help of trusty
Craigslist, he found himself a second 'junker/commuter' bike for
riding about the city and nearby trails (just $65!). Today
was Caroline's turn. She was able to find a sweet black
and silver Giant Cypress comfort-style bike at our local bike
shop. It's perfect for the trails near our house or just
riding down the streets of 'burque (as some folks call it
here)...we're ready to go! And it just wouldn't be right
not to thank Daniel, Leonne and their entire home country of the
Netherlands for getting Caroline back on a bicycle and hooked on
riding after 20 years of being bike-free - thanks, you guys!
Hey, look, it's Scott! |

Back to Work |
|
04/13/07 - Albuquerque, NM
Don't worry, no
cubicles or fixed schedules yet, but... |
|
Just an update on Scott's work status. For the first time
in 2-1/2 years, he no longer has to check the 'unemployed' box
on applications or surveys. His old boss over at
Launch Pad was getting busy
and looking for a little help, so Scott's been averaging 10 or
so hours per week of work over the past month.... just internet
research stuff, so it's all working from home (or our terrace in
PV last month). Not too painful, but man, it's hard to
find the time to work more than a couple of hours a day when
you're not used to it. Is there any sympathy for the poor
guy out there? (The ever-sympathetic Caroline remains
blissfully unemployed...for now). |
