Almost six months after leaving Mexico,
it's finally time to head back. So the day after
Christmas, we packed up the van and hit the road. Since
we've decided to move to Albuquerque sometime soon, we figured
we might as well pass through Abq and drop off a few boxes of
stuff at a friend's house "on our way" to San Miguel de Allende.
Only 800 miles out of the way, so why not, right? But
first, a stop at the lovely 4-star Hilton, located practically
right beneath the famous arch in St. Louis ($46 on
Hotwire!), and then a night in Oklahoma City (if you're ever in
OKC, get a steak at Cattlemen's - best steak ever), before
stopping at family friends Carol & Ric's in Albuquerque - where
they serve fantastic pancakes.
Today we left Abq and drove through
southwest Texas. It was a very surreal sort of landscape.
Out of all of the places we've driven, we've never felt quite so
in the middle of nowhere. Miles of nothing, with cattle
and distant snow-capped mountains the only things to see.
And all of a sudden, on a two-lane highway, we hit a Prada store
- with the nearest potential Prada customer approximately 700
miles away (we're thinking Scottsdale). Upon closer
inspection, we discovered it was a art installation - Prada
Marfa. Hmmmm, interesting. Our stop tonight is
Alpine, Texas, which seems to be a mildly touristy town due to
the fact that it's a mere 108 miles away from Texas' Big Bend
National Park. Tonight we're staying at the Maverick Inn,
an old motor court that was recently re-furbished into a
charming & cozy Tex-Mex style motel. After four days of
driving, we can hardly believe we still have two to go. |
