Guten Tag! Here we are in Germany... We came even after
spending three weeks in places where bitter sentiment toward the
Germans seems to linger (apparently there was some fracas
involving the Germans like 60 or 70 years ago). After a
rather unexciting train ride through Bonn and Cologne, we took
the riverside train down the Rhine from Koblenz to our castle
(The Hotel Schoenburg) in Oberwesel. Although the river is
quite scenic along the train ride, our favorite view is from our
castle-hotel-room window overlooking the Rhine. We
currently think that the commanding view of The Mighty Rhine
from the castle perched high atop a hill is worth the hike up to
the castle, but we'll see how that plays out after a few days...
Apparently everyone drives here in Germany! Who knew?!
Evidently they make their own little German cars here - how
cute! Nary a Chevy to be found. The room is nice and
castle-y, complete with fun features like hidden wall
compartments for the TV (behind a painting) and closet (hinged
mirror), and our favorite, a window from the bathroom to the
bedroom. After settling in, we took a 20-minute riverboat
ride to dinner in St. Goar (schnitzel & sauerkraut, of course).
Tomorrow we set off early for our Mighty Rhine river cruise.
