On March 6th, Scott's
parents arrived in PV to check out our condo and enjoy a break
from the 'Arctic North'. Being the good children that we
are, we made the trip over from San Miguel to show them around a
bit, inspect our new living room furniture and enjoy the beach
atmosphere ourselves.
On Thursday, while
Scott's parents enjoyed our charming ocean-view balcony (some
more), we drove up to La Cruz north of PV to meet up with Elba
and Susan, our sailor friends from San Francisco. They,
like us, decided to chuck it all and hit the open seas, and
arrived in the Bay of Banderas via their 31-foot sailboat,
Infinity, last month. It was great to catch up with
them, sharing stories of 'life after work'. Only, in their
case, they don't plan to ever go back (lucky them!!)
On Saturday, the four
Brookses (and all of our luggage - glorious minivan!) piled into
the Golden Goddess and began the trek back to San Miguel,
stopping for a night in the quaint Mexican tourist town of
Tlaquepaque, where, some of you may recall, Scott and Caroline
enjoy doing a little handicraft shopping now and then. We
stayed at the Casa Campos, which was pleasant enough if you are
into firm (like a 2 x 4) mattresses and flat pillows. Ok,
ok, really it was fine for a night, but it's no Quinta Don Jose
(Caroline's favorite Tlaquepaque hotel, which was unfortunately
booked solid). After spending the afternoon strolling
around town, looking in the shops, and taking a michelada
(a mysterious beer concoction that Mexicans enjoy) break, we
enjoyed a delicious dinner at the Casa Vieja restaurant before
waddling back to the hotel for the night, full and exhausted.
Happily, Tlaquepaque seemed to sit well with Jerry and Denise.
The next morning,
Sunday, we got back on the road and arrived in San Miguel
without incident (if you don't count the construction-related
detour off the cuota (speedy toll road) and a wrong turn
near Leon that both added to the length of our trip).
Since our arrival in San Miguel we have mostly just been taking
it easy and eating (favorite pass-times of Brookses worldwide).
True to form, Denise and Jerry are proving to be easy guests and
are adjusting very well to Mexico, even though this is their
first-ever visit to our new home country.
The excitement for
today: a sightseeing trip to the Tuesday market or tianguis
and then on to Sears in Queretaro, where Jerry will help Scott
pick up our new dishwasher and stove (to be installed during our
kitchen remodel next month). It just doesn't get any more
exciting than this! (Just kidding. Hopefully, it
will get more exciting than this. Don't give up on us -
please keep reading!)
