We've been back at
home in San Miguel for a week now following our coooold
12-day trip to Michigan earlier this month in order to
take care of some administrative details and do a little
pre-Christmas visiting in the arctic north. Largely due to
airfare prices, we decided to return to Mexico a week before
Christmas and spend a quiet holiday here at home. We've
just been catching up on stuff here (we've only spent about 2
weeks here in SMA since the end of October!): discussing our
impending kitchen remodel and potential home-swapping with
Europeans, shopping for furniture for here and
handicraft decor for PV and just enjoying the magic and beauty
(and warmth!) of the season.
Last night,
Nochebuena (Christmas Eve), we attended a terrific party at
some friends' that was catered by their favorite local taco
cart. The taco cart folks brought all their usual
equipment and set it up in the courtyard at Paul and Dione's
casa.
It was a huge hit and they were slingin' tacos and gringas (no,
not American/Canadian women; gringas are just tacos with melted
cheese) like you wouldn't believe! I'm sure it was a
banner night for the taco cart people. There was lots of
wine, beer, spiced fruit punch and tequila and
several pinatas for the numerous kids, which they attacked with
a tennis racquet (Mexico is all about creativity and
resourcefulness!). We met lots of nice people at the
party, and interestingly, almost all of the under-50 gringos
down here have young children. They seem completely
undaunted at the prospect of raising their children here and
even traveling all over the US and Mexico with them. May
this be an inspiration to you young parents out there - where
there's a will, there's a way!
Happy
Holidays,
Everyone!
