Driving to Dallas,
with a quick tour/lunch stop in Little Rock
|

We left Memphis today
setting out for Dallas on our way back to Mexico. We
decided to save our Memphis side trips (Tupelo, Tunica, Holly
Springs, Oxford) for another time since we'll be doing so much
driving over the next few days. Our only excitement of the
day was our 3 hour stop-off in Little Rock. First stop, of
course, was the Clinton Presidential Library. Set out over
the Arkansas River, this beautiful building charges you $7 per
person to get in, so we admired from the outside (C'mon Bill,
libraries are for The People!). We walked down the
riverfront street, stopping in at the Old State House, which is
now a museum that (for free!) you can walk through. It's a
very nicely put together little museum, and for people with
absolutely no expectations (like us), we thought it was quite
entertaining. Just being able to walk around this historic
mansion by yourself with no security or tour guides around was
fun, the fact that the exhibits were of such high quality was
just a bonus.
We lunched on deep-fried pickle spears (a southern specialty)
and a very tasty turkey sandwich with apples and strawberry
preserves on cinnamon raisin bread to power up before getting
back on the road. The 'scenic route' out of Little Rock
took us through quite a plethora of urban blight, which appears
to be what most of Little Rock consists of, besides the lovely
riverfront business district. Now we're about to try to
sleep on the uncomfortable mattress of our $44 (Hotwire - again)
Holiday Inn room in the Garland/Mesquite section of the huge
Dallas metropolitan area. |
